We tried HostingRails for about 2 months but decided to go to another hosting site and platform. They auto-charged my credit card for about $100 although they verified it had been unused for the majority of the year. They claimed they sent an email for cancellation, but it was not received. The customer support person just repeated the refrain, "It's company policy." If you visit their Facebook page, they overcharged someone else as well. This is the real "Company Policy," charge people for unused services.

I didn't end up using this host for very long, but when I tried to cancel my account (the autorenew part at least), they told me I *was not allowed* to do that until 30 days from the next payment date.

Their management interface is buggy (frequently but inconsistently redirected me to the jumpline site for no apparent reason) as well.

I started with these guys 3 years ago and they were really good.

However, Jumpline bought them in the past year and things have gotten HORRIBLE!

I have the most expensive package and it runs like a cheap $2 host.

Stay away from them.

Because of their low price and ability to host multiple domains on one account, I used HostingRails for the past two years to host some low priority websites--things like family photos and a few hobby sites. Nothing critical was hosted there (thankfully). I had hoped the service would work out well enough that I could eventually put some Rails sites on this host, but I had enough trouble with mere PHP / HTML sites there that I never tried a Rails site.

Uptime wasn't too bad for the type of site I had there and the amount I was paying (about $10/month paid annually) but the servers did occasionally go down. My problems began when they did some infrastructure changes. As expected, they notified me and others in advance but after they made some changes to their hardware, my email accounts stopped working.

I tried over a period of a couple of days to work with their support people (probably exchanging 40 emails) to get the problem fixed but they were never able to do so. I switched to FusedNetwork (which I found via this site) and without changing any settings on my mail client, my email worked--so the configuration problems were clearly on HostingRails' side.

On the positive side, support responded quickly to my emails but often hadn't read my replies to them. For example: I said "My email is broken...blah..blah...here's my username and password..." And they replied, "We'll look into it. What's your username and password?" This happened routinely.

The final impetus to review them here came when I tried to cancel my account. I have 11 months left since I pay annually. I said I didn't want money back; I just wanted out. They said I can't get out until my renewal period comes up next May during which time I'll have a short window (2 weeks I think) to fill out a cancellation form or I'll be charged again. So I changed my stored credit card on their site. We'll see what happens with that but I have never been so happy to be away from a host.

The worst hosting we have ever sign up with. Our site was down a couple of times each week.

The support team don't understand our requests very well, and were unwilling to help.

On one of the responses one of the support team only said "we are looking into it" and nothing ever comes again.

Please don't host with them unless you are ready for heartbreaks.
