Web Hosting Reviews for Gearworx

I have been hosting my website since 2004 with Gearworx. Until two years ago everything ran pretty well, minimal issues. Last two years the environment got less stable, with mail server issues, and no reaction on my support tickets. Last month, Gearworx let expire my domain, resulting in loss of my domain I have used for more than 10 years now, including my family's email addresses and website. I have entered numerous support tickes, sent emails to all known Gearworx websites, but to no avail. I guess I will have lost my domain forever.

If you had asked me two years ago, I would have recommended this hosting company, however, everything has changed for the worst, and I reluctantly have to warn possible customers against non-existent support from this company!

I wouldn't recommend Gearworx to my worst enemy. Customer service and technical support are non-existent. Nobody ever answers the phone and voicemails are never returned. The average response time for a trouble ticket or billing inquiry is one week. One week!

The straw that broke the camel's back for me happened when I tried to create a new email account - a task that should only take 10 seconds. The new email didn't work (of course) and more than 2.5 weeks went by without a response from "support." That's when I decided to transfer all my domain registrations and hosting services to another company.

Of course, Gearworx never responded when I requested the necessary transfer authorization codes (surprise, surprise). I had to get ICANN involved.

FYI, Gearworx has an "F" rating with the BBB. It's LLC papers have been suspended by the California Secretary of State office at the request of the Franchise Tax Board. It is not a legit company - do not engage in business with it!

Time to post a positive review about Gearworx. I've been hosting with them for a while. I recently got myself a VPS server running on their new servers.

I can't speak about the other experiences with their previous VPS hosting but, this is a whole new animal with what seems to be a very simple service: VPS hosting that looks and feels like a dedicated server. I love the fact that they run in a hypervisor. That means no software limitation, which I'm guessing is the reason why other people were complaining.

NOTE: They don't provide services for the faint of heart. They have a good support team (especially Ben) that actually knows a thing or, two about hosting. Not to mention Coldfusion 8, which is what I have.

If you want hand-holding along the way, forget it, their services won't cut it for you. If you're a developer like me that thinks the KISS system is the best, then welcome to Gearworx!

I do recommend them but, with caution.

Cheers!

This has been the worst experience I have ever had with any hosting companies. I had a VPS with Gearworx and it my box kept going down AT LEAST once a week. What a joke! On top of that, support was marginal at best. No phone support and the response time is longer than 24 hours. Their services would probably be OK if one wanted to run a hobby website but it is impossible to run any sort of business with any degree of confidence. I should have left them as soon as the problem started (the first month) but I kept giving them too many chances. I would never recommend them to anyone unless they are OK with 80% uptime.

Service with these guys is a REAL nightmare. Problems remain unsolved for 12-18 hours after you raise a ticket. You literally have to beg these guys to do their job. Please avoid.

These guys have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They do not answer phone calls, and they will not return voice mails. You should feel very lucky if they respond to a support ticket you open. Gearworx deleted all of my files when they did one of their "upgrades". I submitted a support ticket, and they never got back to me on it.
